odd mouse action on kernel upgrade

When I use the 2.4.26 kernel, my mouse -- a regular ps2 logitech with wheel -- works fine in kde. But when I upgrade the kernel, either to 2.6.6 or 2.6.7 with the stock debian kernel packages, the mouse starts behaving weirdly. Both buttons and the wheel (when clicked) act as the context button. So this means I can't effectively select or load anything.

I haven't yet tweaked these new kernels at all. They are straight from apt.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Run "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and set your mouse device to /dev/input/mice, which is what 2.6.x kernels use for PS/2 mice. After upgrading to 2.6.x kernel you may also find that you cannot start X any more because X doesn't find your mouse. To prevent this you can add "psmouse" (without quotation marks) to the end of /etc/modules -- even if you can currently start X without any problems. The "psmouse" line in /etc/modules loads the mouse driver during bootup, so that it's ready when you start X.

Hope this fixes your mouse problem, although the symptoms you describe are a bit different from the usual troubles that people experience after upgrading to 2.6.x kernel.

aha...

Thanks.
I had tried adding the line to /etc/modules (as well as "mousedev") based on Matt's kernel upgrade instructions in this forum, and this didn't fix the problem, but I had not reconfigured the xserver (as per your suggestions). That worked.

Next: a recompile with the boot splash patch...
