Obtaining Java and OpenGL via apt-get

Ok, I'm new to debian, I struggled through the installation of the base system, and couldn't install anything when I booted into the base system. I managed to get xfree86,kde, gdm and gaim through apt-get. The only problem is getting java and openGL through apt-get. when I type "apt-get install x" it says it couldn't find package java.I know this problem is solvable, and if i had more time I would look myself, but I'm currently trying to get Grub to boot my kernel in 1024*768 (I know lilo can accomplish this) and also make my windows partition appear as a boot option. Any help on the java or openGL would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Java > http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/de...-faq/ch11.html

As for OpenGL it depends on your graphics card, get the right drivers if they are not included in xfree86 and load the kernel modules for your model. Hint: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and use modconf.

After installing several java-packages via apt-get I tried to install a program that required a java-runtime enviroment. I got the following message:

Extracting the installation resources from the installer archive...
Configuring the installer for this system's environment...
No Java virtual machine could be found from your PATH
environment variable. You must install a VM prior to
running this program

As for the openGL, that can wait... do you know how to make a
logo appear at the top of the screen while the kernel is booting by the way?

Try installing Java following these instructions. They worked for me, at least.

Adding your Windows partition to Grub can be done by editing /boot/grub/menu.lst. I don't know how to make Grub look pretty.

As for OpenGL, that's part of your video card's driver. Search for information on installing your driver. You'll have more luck with Nvidia's drivers, I've heard ATI's Linux support is pretty bad.
