No Sound

I just installed a fresh copy of Debian (sarge) on my system:

- Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz
- Epox EP-4PCA3+
- Onboard C-Media CMI9739A selectable 2 or 6-CH audio CODEC (AC97 v2.2 compliant)

I don't know what to do to get Debian to recognize my sound card drivers on my mainboard.

"sorry! no mixer elements/devices were found."

Is there any hope to have sound on this system?

Try "modprobe snd-intel8x0", see if that loads the right sound card module.

Assuming it does, you'll want to add it to its own line in the file "/etc/modules" (as root user).

I don't understand what you mean. Is this a command you are giving me?

Code:
debian:/home/carlos# modprobe snd-intel8x0
modprobe: Can't locate module snd-intel8x0

Hey carlwill, it's culinist from pcper.

modprobe xxxx is the command to load a module into your kernel.
ie: #modprobe snd-intel8x0 will load a sound card module.

If you did just a basic net-install you will not have alsa installed. Follow my instructions over at pcper to install a new up to date kernel and see where you are then. It should take care of everything for you, we hope.

If you were refering to me It was just a simple way to upgrade your kernel.

# apt-get install synaptic
# synaptic
search for kernel-image
(select kernel for your arch)
install kernel-image
reboot
choose new kernel from grub screen

or

$ apt-cache search kernel-image
# apt-get install kernel-image-<insert the one you want minus brackets>
# reboot
choose new kernel from grub screen

This is a very basic way that I do it, and has worked with Debian sid for me. I'm sure others have a more exact science sorta way to do it.
