No application installed that can open it?

Ive got the latest version of debian/gnu.
I want to use firefox.
When I download it I get a "message box" that tells me
it's not possible to view this file because there is no application installed that can open it; (and) You can save it instead.
what I want to do is just download it and start using it(Firefox).
I'm very new to Debian.
Not very technical yet.
Is there a simple way to accomplish this?
What application is needed to make it run? and how do I go about installing it and running it?
I have several other browsers that I installed after I installed debian/gnu. I just ran the command #tasksel install desktop.
Thanks for your help.

What is "it" that you downloaded - is it the firefox binary?

The easiest way to install programs on Debian is to use apt-get. For example, to install firefox, run:
Code:
apt-cache search firefox
to find the exact package name, in this case it is "mozilla-firefox". Then you can install it (as root) using
Code:
apt-get install mozilla-firefox
I hope this helps
