Unhappy nm-applet only shows "device not ready", trying to connect manually doesn't work either.

I'm unable to connect to any wi-fi due to the fact that nm-applet doesn't display any nearby networks and only says "The device is not ready".
If I try to connect to a network with nmcli device wifi connect net123, it just says that the SSID could not be found. It works on any other device.

I also tried "nmcli connection up net123" (though I can't remember what that was supposed to do) but it only returned saying "The device wlp3s0 could not be activated because device could not be activated."

I've tried everything I could find online.

I can't download any packages because I can't connect to the internet.

What "works on any other device"?

It sounds like the device hasn't started (perhaps due to missing firmware) or is disabled by rfkill.

As you haven't specific what release this is, nor what hardware, there's very little I can offer.

Sorry for my vague wording. The wi-fi network I was trying to connect to works on other devices.
I use a Debian 12 system with a Windows 11 dual boot, on a LENOVO IdeaPad.

Could you give some more details please?
I already read through both of these.

Run rfkill to see if there are any devices disabled by kill switch:
Code:
$ rfkill list
grep the kernel buffer for anything to do with firmware:
Code:
# dmesg|grep -i firmware

It says rfkill is not a command.

When running the dmesg command:
Code:

vk8a8,

You need to install the necessary non-free firmware which is not included in Debian.

Connect to a wired network with a RJ45 cable.

If you don’t have gedit, then install it.

Alternatively use nano (default text editor in Debian).

Open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T) and then edit the /etc/apt/sources.list.

Code:
sudo apt update

sudo apt install gedit
Then:

Code:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Type non-free after main contrib (leaving a space)

Click on Save, then exit (X) the saved file.

Next:

Code:
sudo apt update

sudo apt install firmware-atheros

sudo reboot
You should now have wifi.
