snmp staus shows it running but on trying MRTG, it shows public@ipaddr not giving res

hi! I'm trying to monitor a linux server by MRTG. I have configured MRTG and i have enabled SNMP as well, and on doing /etc/init.d/snmpd status it shows snmp running.but on trying to monitor it thru MRTG, it shows public@ipaddress not giving response. What could be done in this case?
Kindly help,
thanks in advance,
Swati

Quite clearly your snmpd daemon is not responding to the "community" string you are specifying. Have you configured your snmpd.conf. What version are you using?

What happens when you snmpwalk it?

(version 1)
$ snmpwalk -v 1 -c [COMMUNITY] enterprise.ucdavis

COMMUNITY is normally "public" but you should change it.

mrtg.cfg needs to be configured to query that MIB. Substitute "enterprise.ucdavis" with that MIB value and query again.

Also check if you have any ACLs on snmpd.conf.

no more a problem

for people that will look in the future for this:

run snmpconfig without importing any files,
create a snmpd.conf
do not touch the agent settings, just set the basics as the public account, admin contact data, set snmpv2.1 public account for community, accessible only through localhost (security is first priority)

run cfgmaker with wanted parameters (man cfgmaker) and set destination to /etc/mrtg.cfg (or at least that is on debian), set if is not set from the package a cron job for mrtg(see docs) and you are set...

If anybody wants to see my graphs my sexy penguin
