Newbie: XWin install problem - Can't find screen

Hi Folks,

Apologies, relative newbie here.

I am trying to install Debian-Sarge onto a DEC Alpha Miata-class PWS-500a and I am having issues with the XWindows install.

I'm using a Matrox Melennium video card, and I've tried both the mga and vga drivers at various resolutions and scan rates - no joy. The diagnostic output correctly identifies the card, and the mga driver states that this card is supported, but then states that it can find no screens (!). It then disables the X server and dumps me to the console.

Is ther some magic handshake I've missed, or am I just not holding my mouth right?

Frustrated,

Gary

Checking /var/log/XFree86.0.log for any error messages -- lines beginning with (EE) -- might be a good idea. The reason why screens were not found is usually stated near the end of the log file.

It appears that your graphics card was correctly recognized (apparently you should choose the mga driver) but there are still two common problem areas left -- configuring mouse and monitor refresh values. If you install the mdetect package, you should be given an opportunity to let Debian autoconfigure the mouse (in "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86"). You'll find the horizontal and vertical refresh values for your monitor from the manual that came with the monitor. If you've lost the manual, do a Google search for your monitor's manufacturer and model with the keywords "horizontal" and "vertical".

EDIT:
There's also another way to get the harware information that you need in "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86", but this is by no means a foolproof solution:

$ su
# aptitude --with-recommends install xdebconfigurator

# xdebconfigurator -x

This should output a list that you can write down and use in "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86". The most important lines are VIDEO DRIVER, MOUSE DEVICE, MOUSE PROTOCOL, MONITOR HOR SYNC, and MONITOR VER REFR. Good luck!

Well, I've tried everything I can think of, and eveything I have benn able to find on the net. I've installed discover and mdetect, I've reinstalled X, and I've tried every possible permutation of setting to get this to work...no joy. The card is a Matrox Millennium (mga2604w) and the monitor is an HP L1702.

Here's the log.

Does anyone have a clue what's going on here? AAAUUUUGGGHHH!!!

Attached below is the log:
