MPlayer breaks XMMS on Sarge?

I posted this in the software forum but no response...

So I'll try here...

I had a hard time getting mplayer-plugin to compile and install.

After finally succeeding it has wreaked havoc with the system preferences in KDE...specifically the file associations for streaming audio....PLS files...

I keep getting the message whenever I click on a playlist that the default player is not installed...(or more correctly - no lnger installed)

I deleted the mplayer-plugin plugin installation (best I could)...apt-get remove xmms...deleted by hand all the associations in KDE preferences...(for those two installs)

Reinstalled the regular XMMS package...uninstall, reinstall....

I'm ripping my hair out!...No matter what...when I click on a playlist I get the error message....

FInally I saved the playlist to desktop...clicked on it there...XMMS starts and plays the remote stream with the error message MESSAGE: DEVICE: DEFAULT.....that's it nothing else to specify what the problem is....

Does anyone have any idea what I need to do to get this resolved? Beyond a complete system re-install (which I'm so frustrataed at this point I'm ready to do yet still reluctant as this is a QUAD-boot I've got set-up)?

EDIT: p.s. I was getting a message about libmikmodso.2 earlier but solved that by finally loading the package

EDIT2: Here's the exact message, it seems to be from KDE;

Download Error - /tmp/shoutcast-playlist.pls could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.

As I said I've worked over the preferences repeatedly to no avail...it's as if KDE is not saving the changes?

ANd I should note that XXMS was palying the playlists before the mplayer-plugin install....

Any help is greatly appreciated..

TIA

Note: I just read in another forum that "double posting" is against the rules. Fine. But I want to point out that this subject is about getting XMMS working again whereas the other thread was originally about getting MPLAYER-PLUGIN to compile and install...all this is on Debian so I feel it belongs here because of the file structure adn package management features of Debian.

I resolved this by accident.

It turns out it was Firefox settings that were broken.

Apparently, when the mplayer-plugin installed (finally) it messed up the Firefox preferences in such a way the the default player for that mime-type appeared to be missing...

When revisiting the mplayer-plugin website they have a test page in which you can test your installation...http://fredrik.hubbe.net/plugger/test.html

For some reason I clicked to test mp3...Firefox as usual said the plugin was not there (I uninstalled it!) However below the icon they have the text "Click here to test this mime-type in the entire frame" which is nothing more than a link to the mp3 file...Firefox popped up asking me what application I wanted to use to open the file...apt-get install xmms....and chose xmms...

There is a checkbox - Do this automatically for files like this from now on"

If you check it an additional message comes up in the pop-up - "Settings can be changed in the Downloads section of Edit>Preferences"...

After looking through KDEs preferences for a minute or two it dawns on me that the meesage is from Firefox...duh! It's been Firefox all along! Bah.

I'm still confused as to why the mplayer-pluin configure make make install would break that preference in Firefox but I note the mplayer-plugin is ...well a plugin ...for Mozilla....

I guess it removed my preference and replaced it with nothing for some reason....but I suspect it chose a non-existent path instead...
