mplayer problems on debian (sarge)

I've been having problems getting mplayer to work in debian now, and i can't seem to figure it out. I downloaded the package, since at first i couldn't portage it. I configured it and it gave me the error that I didn't have the codecs installed. Okay, no problem i thought. Installed codecs and no dice. I got sound but no video.

After a bit of searching i found that by adding to my /etc/apt/sources.list i could use portage. I did so, but no matter which version of portage I have it displays both audio and video, but when I try to put it in fullscreen the playback stays the same size and the rest of the screen just turns black (i.e. its not scaling the picture)

any ideas? please help.

try:
mplayer -vo xv -fs
that forces it to use the XVideo extensions... if ur X setup supports it.
otherwise read the FAQ:
Q: The -xy or -fs option doesn't work with the x11 driver (-vo x11) ...
A: It does, but you have to explicitly specify software scaling (very slow) with the -zoom option.

so try: mplayer -vo x11 -fs -zoom

if ur computer is not very fast then u will get slow playback using this method.

if you don't have the xv extension, you may still have the gl extension, so you may have luck with the command "mplayer -vo gl" or "mplayer -vo gl2"
