Hi,

I have a adsl connection at home. But I do not have any connection at my workplace, which has a network. How do I take the debs needed and install them in the server over there?

I know how this can be done from the docs, but the trouble is that I cannot be sure what debs I need to download, burn to a CD and take along.

The ones I need are postgresql and zope/plone.

Any simple solution or do a tarball install?

There is a download packages only option in apt - you could do that, burn them to a cd and add the cd as a source in your work pc.

Man apt-get should give more info.

You should also check out the debian-cd package. I use it to back up the packages I download to cd (I'm on a dialup connection so ~1GB of accumulated downloaded data is good to backup). The cds made by the scripts in that package can be used by apt-cdrom.

Here' a trick to enable apt to read packages from a cd. Download the packages and you can incorporate any and all packages from /var/cache/apt/archives. Make a new directory say called debs. Copy all the packages you want into this directory. Using the command line cd to the new directory and do "dpkg-scanpackages debs file | gzip > debs/Packages.gz"
This generates the file Packages.gz which contains all the info about the packages in the directory and is used by APT. Burn the contents of the debs directory to a cd and you now have a mobile APT source.

I am thinking of putting the debs into a directory. I do not understand what file means in the above "dpkg-scanpackages debs file | gzip > debs/Packages.gz" that you mention.

file is the override file; debs file. Just reading up on APT you in fact do not need to cd to /root/debs but can "scanpackages" from /root.
