when upgrading you do not need any cds. But as far as your sound issue what are your system specs?

I intially had a sound issue with lenny to on my asus laptop but got it working with little problem.

Do you have an HD sound card?

what is output of lspci?

have you run [alsaconf to do the sound configuration, and then alsamixer to ensure sound isn't muted ?

I had an issue with lenny on one box where it wouldnt' install grub to the disc for whatever reason. I fugured it was due to the adaptec sata disk controller. I booted from the Super grub disk into my Lenny install then installed grub from the running Lenny system, with no issues at all. it was rather bizarre, because while the Lenny installer worked perfectly well for every other part of the setup, it didn't seem to even TRY to install grub to the hard disk, it just immediately failed that portion of the setup.

farslayer,

No, I hadn't run those apps. I ran alsaconf and it found two 'cards'. One was listed as hda-(something) and one was a legacy card. I tied both and can't get any sound. I've also run alsamixer and the master was full on, as were 'PCM' and 'front'. When I run alsaconfr, it kills Volume Control (which has now ended up removed from the bar across the top of the screen) and IceWeasel. I've tried playing vids from youtube and a music CD with no joy. With the lagacy card seting, alsaconf thought the first choice probed for was found.

alsamixer list my card as HDA VIA VTX82xx and the chip as Realtek ALC662 rev1.

Any ideas?

Kirk

UPDATE: Nevermind...cable was unplugged. Sounds works now... Thanks for the alsa hints tho...

the command is actually LSPCI. lspci does look like ispci though. I get confused on that sometimes.

LSPCI lists all devices active on the pci bus...LSUSB lists devices on the usb bus

Glad you got the sound working without much difficulty. I had to recompile the alsa moudle to a newer version since the one that comes with lenny had a bug for the intel hd sound cards.
