Knoppix modem installs but doesnt

G'day guys
I just got Knoppix v3.2 and I love IT!! I love it more than my copy of Mandrake 9.1

Anyway i just got my windmodem going under mandrake and can connect to the internet but when i do the same thing it says it work (but tainted the kernel) but still /dev/modem isn't there.

any ideas?

this is wat i do:

./configure --with-hal=pctel789
make
--GOTO ROOT--
insmod pctel.o
insmod ptserial.o

and it works FYI For mandrake i use insmod -f
but knoppix didnt need it

check to see if it is using a different device instead of /dev/modem... for example, my Sprint PCS Cell phone installs as a USB device /dev/ACM01 or something, I then repoint the link for the /dev/modem if I want

Good Luck

ls -l for long output, ls -a for all files, try using: ls -al | more

using the pipe more will allow you to view page by page...

if your looking for just the modem link, then use: ls -al | grep -i modem

Good Luck

Dr. Snark,

Are you sending the correct init string... what type of modem? internal, external, win-modem, riser card?

It's a Winmodem -- HSP 56Micromodem to be Exact..

I downloaded the minicom Package, Tried that, I use the Port ots supposed to be on but it keeps saying "Modem is Busy." but when i use another port it just hangs there.. I even linked to to /dev/modem and still NO LUCK, I can't afford 99 bucks for a Hardware modem, i've been looking, LOL.. but I Do want to get it working.

cam34,
are the modules for the pctel installed?

Dr. Snark,
isn't the HSP 56 made by pctel? if so then try the same modules that cam34 was using in the begining of this post...

xmen24,
Is HCH the manufacturer, is it a winmodem? your drivers should have come with a readme on how to compile and use them, maybe give a link where they were found...

Also, you can try this link, http://free.hostdepartment.com/g/gro....html#Database

Sorry mispelt HCF for HCH.
I am Running Knoppix off the CD. So I am bound to get read/write error. Can I install it directly into the Ramdrive The Cd creates during booting as HD install will take a huge space.

Yeah It won't recogize my modem

When I get to The insmod ptserial.o

it says "device not found"

BTW: that site: 500- Account Disabled

I Don't know -- Every Module I've seen is either for Mandrake or REdhat -- None for Debian

i get this

pci=x20???? in the compile

and won't make the serial.0

im getting realy ticked when other people can connect and i can't

Hope you already found this, but if not

http://www.ccm.ece.vt.edu/~lscharf/s...ones+and+Linux

I'm connecting at 230K

Unlimited network usage, almost makes me want to get rid of my cable modem, NOT.

Lot better then dial up ISP.
