The problem is that you have to be root to change the display settings. Try to log into KDE as root and then try opening the configuration program. Hope that works.

The biggest problem I have found with Knoppix is the display configuration. It does a great job of giving a working display setting, but not always the best one. The display options available in the KDE control center are also limited. I installed Knoppix on 3 different machines, and two of them had display problems. I cheated by using the free version of Libranet to get a display configuration, then I used that display configuration in the Knoppix install. Since both Libranet and Knoppix are Debian, the configuration files can be exchanged. Using that trick would require installing Libranet though, because I don't think it has a Live CD version. I installed Libranet, copied the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file to my windows partion, then overwrote the Libranet install with Knoppix, and overwrote the XF86Config-4 file in Knoppix with the one generated by Libranet. It is a long route to changing a display setting, but I had Libranet on the machine when I started.
