Kernel Q

Not sure where to put this kernel question so I'm putting it here, but I'm open for corrections

I have succesfully compiled a custom kernel on my pc#1 as a .deb package using make-kpkg, installed it on pc#2, boots without errors. Hooray !

However , make-kpkg doesn't make any kernel-headers as far as I'm aware of, so I can't compile stuff with the new kernel. I tried putting the correct source in /usr/src/2.6.14.1 but it just complaines about missing sources. Symlink in /lib/modules/2.6.14.1/buils is there.

So I removed the new kernel image to revert to the custom 2.6.8-2-386 kernel since I needed to compile ndiswrapper (it's a laptop). Before I installed the new kernel, I did just that, wireless worked perfectly, but logically enough the new kernel didn't use the old ndiswrapper module. Then this happens : The old (default) kernel wont compile ndiswrapper, sadly I don't have the error msg, so something must have been messed up. I'll reinstall as soon as I have had some coffee.

So, how do I install a custom kernel, built with make-kpkg, that is capable of compiling stuff ?
And, is there something I should know/do so that the new kernel doesn't mess up the old one ?

Both computers are running Debian unstable.

Any thoughts/suggestion/solution mighty welcome !

BTW: Wireless on this old laptop, a Compaq Presario 1926, is working perfectly in linux

Kernel headers are seperately from the kernel available: http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/s...le&release=all

Ok, so since headers for kernel 2.6.14.x is not in that list, I would have to compile modules etc. on another computer ?

Also, shouldn't linux be able to compile when the sources is available, or does it need sources + headers ?

Thanks for the info

There is a more generic "linux-kernel-headers" package that shoud work with 2.6.14 as well. I compiled Nvidia succesfully on Sarge with 2.6.14.2, so that should do.

When you compile a kernel package using make-kpkg you can add extra options to include or exclude various parts.

"make-kpkg binary-arch" will create packages for both the kernel-image and kernel-headers. You can then install them both and use the headers to compile extra modules, such as ndiswrapper with module-assistant.

Read "man make-kpkg" for more options.

I feel embarassed. Man make-kpkg is my next stop.

Making a package for the headers too is exactly what I needed, thanks !
