Kernel Panic: 428, HELP!

I built my new system with an Athlon 64. Everythin went well.

I've installed Debian Sarge and I can't get into the system.

Quote:
Starting Ubuntu...
pivot_root:No such file or directory
/sbin/init:428:cannot open dev/console: No such file
kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
This is the one I took off of my Kubuntu install which preceded my Debian install. I don't know how to fix that. I have an Adaptec 29160N Ultra160 card and a Fujitsu 36.6 GB U160 drive as my boot and install drive.

How can I fix that error so I can actually get into my system?

Something is fishy.
  • Why does it say "Starting Ubuntu" when you say you just installed Debian? Did you choose to boot into your new Debian installation? Did the bootloader (grub or lilo) get installed - it should have... did you get any errors during the installation. And please clarify the sentence "This is the one I took off of my Kubuntu install which preceded my Debian install." as I do not quite understand it fully.
  • pivot_root:No such file or directory means that it can't find the root filesystem of the installation. In other words: something is very wrong.

His distro in his profile says he uses gentoo, he installs Debian to finally boot Ubuntu...
