java doesn't work in my browser

I want to do sth on topcoder.com but I get info that my java doesn't work. I have installed icedtea and openjdk-6-jre. I can start some applets on other sites. How can I check what is wrong. Java web start considering topcoder sucks either (i've tried but looks like it open window with the progress bar and hangs).

Hi,

Okay, let's look at some feedback, first. Is the console visible when you start an applet up? If not, make it visible first.
Now is a good time to decide what JRE to use, dont just jumble everything around, it could cause stuff to collide.
I use the JRE from java.com. I had some trouble getting it fine tuned, but things really looked up as soon as that was the only one around...

Lemme keep this thread on the radar to see where the eagle splats down

I have got no idea how it all works. I examined the code of websites from topcoder and example applet somewhere in the internet. I can run the example applet in my browser. I don't know what console you are talking about.

When I go the web start way I can see a window nothing else.

!EDIT: I thing I solved it.

I examined the jnlp file which content is:
Quote:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<jnlp spec="1.0+" codebase="http://community.topcoder.com/contest/arena/" href="ContestAppletProd.jnlp">
<information>
<title>Competition Arena</title>
<vendor>TopCoder, Inc.</vendor>
<homepage href="http://www.topcoder.com"/>
<description>TopCoder Contest Arena</description>
<icon href="http://community.topcoder.com/images/favicon_new.gif"/>
</information>
<security>
<all-permissions/>
</security>
<resources>
<j2se version="1.4+" max-heap-size="128m"/>
<jar href="http://community.topcoder.com/contest/classes/ContestApplet.jar"/>
</resources>
<application-desc main-class="com.topcoder.client.contestApplet.runner.generic">
<argument>www.topcoder.com</argument>
<argument>5001</argument>
<argument>http://tunnel1.topcoder.com/tunnel?dummy</argument>
<argument>TopCoder</argument>
</application-desc>
</jnlp>
I found how open jar files. I guessed the arguments and typed this:
Quote:
java -jar ContestApplet.jar www.topcoder.com 5001 http://tunnel1.topcoder.com/tunnel?dummy TopCoder
The application has start up. Nevertheless I managed to bypass the problem, I find it highly inaccurate to consider it solved.

Could you describe what feedback you need so that I can understand due to my lack of experience with java?
