Install Gnome

Ok, I am using Debian "etch" & did a bare min install and used apt to install Gnome as my windows manager.

Code:
debian# apt-get install gnome
Now that I have done so and it completed with no visable errors, I decided to reboot the server & I have no clue how to boot into Gnome. Am I still missing something? "startx" is an invalid command according to my system but if someone can please tell me what I need to do from here...

Thanks!

Have you installed XFree86 yet?
How about a GUI login (if you desire one)?

# apt-get install x-window-system gdm

All I did was run the command

# apt-get install gnome

I was not told about needing XFree86 and I would like a GUI login as well.
Is there a way I can find out if I have XFree86 and or how to install this?

Thanks.

Sure, just run that command I posted above.
That will get you the X-server (XFree86 in Etch) and the GUI login (gdm).

If it's already installed then apt will tell you that no newer version is avail.

# apt-get install x-window-system gdm

Do what it tells you at the bottom of the output namely run apt-get update to refresh the package cache then try the install command again.

If that doesn't work just pick another mirror.

That did not work...I always run the apt-get update command before I use APT to make sure everything is immediate.

How do I select another mirror? Do I need to edit my sources.list?

to setup additional sources you can run at root:
apt-setup

this will allow you to add repositories..

Meh - I have no clue what sources to add or anything of that nature. I thought installing Gnome would be simple.
Where would someone new to Debian know to get sources from? Do I constanly have to change sources when I want to install something or is there a source I can use that will basically have much of what I am looking for?

The source list is located at /etc/apt/sources.list

Here is a basic source list that should be useful:

Code:
deb ftp://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
deb-src ftp://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/debian/ testing main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main

#Debian Unofficial packages for Sarge/Stable Opera, Java
deb http://ftp.debian-unofficial.org/debian/ sarge main contrib non-free restricted
deb-src http://ftp.debian-unofficial.org/debian/ sarge main contrib non-free restricted

# Mplayer,Acroread,Realplayer,Codecs,Various Packages
deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ etch main

#Java For Debian
deb http://www.tux.org/pub/java/debian/ testing non-free

There is a thread like this somewhere in the Debian forum that I posted to recently. Setup your sources then do
Code:
#apt-get install x-window-system xserver-xfree86 gnome-desktop
If you are going to use unstable and prefer xorg, then substitute xserver-xfree86 above with xserver-xorg.

Would there be an reason to select Xorg over XFree86? I think I have always used Xorg with previous versions of Fedora.

My sources.list

Try taking out the "us" in your list. Then run apt-get update

Not particuarly since it will be in Etch soon enough.
Unless you have some distinct need I'd go with the default x-server.
