Ok, I am using Debian "etch" & did a bare min install and used apt to install Gnome as my windows manager.
Code:
debian# apt-get install gnome
Now that I have done so and it completed with no visable errors, I decided to reboot the server & I have no clue how to boot into Gnome. Am I still missing something? "startx" is an invalid command according to my system but if someone can please tell me what I need to do from here...
Originally posted by carlwill I was not told about needing XFree86 and I would like a GUI login as well.
Is there a way I can find out if I have XFree86 and or how to install this?
Sure, just run that command I posted above.
That will get you the X-server (XFree86 in Etch) and the GUI login (gdm).
If it's already installed then apt will tell you that no newer version is avail.
Meh - I have no clue what sources to add or anything of that nature. I thought installing Gnome would be simple.
Where would someone new to Debian know to get sources from? Do I constanly have to change sources when I want to install something or is there a source I can use that will basically have much of what I am looking for?

The source list is located at /etc/apt/sources.list
Here is a basic source list that should be useful:
