Hi all,

After installing Knoppix 3.2 from the hard disk, I have tried to install and upgrade to Gnome 2.4. This has now been done ... however I cannot install gnome-utils package using apt-get or even after downloading the .deb package and trying to install the same.

The error message after apt-get'ting gnome-utils is as below
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-utils_2.2.1-1_i386.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/gnome-character-map', which is also in package gucharmap
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-utils_2.2.1-1_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)


In the /usr/bin directory there was no file named gnome-character-map so I created an empty file. However this also resulted in the same error when I tried it again.

Any ideas on how to resolve this error will be highly appreciated. I am not (yet) very conversant with Linux so pl. excuse any off the point rambling in this post.

Thanks for the reply .. got the package installed by using the command given.

I do have another (related) issue...I dont seem to be able to lock the screen using the lock screen command...any ideas..

Also.. in order to install knoppix to the hard disk... when you boot up knoppix.. at the prompt enter "knoppix lang=us 2". Then when you login as root at the login prompt run the following command "knx-hdinstall" and follow the instructions. Thats all there is to it.
