How to enable USER to format floppy


Hi folks,

Debian - unstable
Gnome 2.4

On Gnome desktop
USER is not allowed to format floppy

Application -> System Tools -> Floppy Formatter
following warning popup
You do not have the proper permissions to write to /dev/fd0, formatting will not be possible.

How to enable USER to format floppy

I suggest adding floppy to the user. If you are using kde ->K ->System -> Kuser -> user edit -> check floppy

As root, type adduser USER floppy
Then, when USER logged in next time, (s)he can format.

if that doesnt work you could just edit /etc/fstab,

The line for your floppy will probably be something like

/dev/fd0 /floppy auto user,noauto 0 0,

but if it says owner instead of user then only root can use it, so i just changed it and hey presto

thats how i did it anyway!

HI,

Debian can't do it as you advised. Other distros I have used can. I don't know why.
