How do i format a floppy?


I know this is stupid but how do i format a floppy disk under linux?(I have amndrake 9.2)

mformat (if you installed mtool's) if you want MSDOS compatable or mkfs otherwise

mkfs.msdos /dev/fd0

mkfs.vfat /dev/fd0


PS : You must not mount your floppy. Just type any of the above two commands. You can also create a floppy with ext2 FS, which is better.

mke2fs /dev/fd0

Thanx!Can i format my removable drive this way? (eg mkfs.vfat /dev/xxx )

Ya you could. But be careful, as this will format it in FAT16. For FAT32, you have to pass some options, which I have forgotten. Try searching this forum as I've seen it mentioned a dozen times .

PS : My favourite film of all time is BraveHeart .

If you want a standard DOS formated floppy
fdformat
http://linux.about.com/library/cmd/blcmdl8_fdformat.htm


You can also format it with a linux filesystem.
