How many of the CDs should I download?

As the title says. And which version? I'm think of the 31r3 version. Is debian updated frequently. I ask because does the r3 mean a 31 final is not too far off?

If you have a high speed/broadband connection your bets bet is to use the Etch netinstall cd.

I'd prefer to have some sort of base install on CDs/DVD because it is not uncommon for me to start everything from scratch

Then get the DVD's or the complete CD set. Perhaps it's useful for you to setup a local mirror on your network (for personal use only perhaps?) for the architecture you use. Okay, maybe a bit overkill, but as you state that you regularly re-install it might be worth investigating

CD 1 Is sufficient for a basic install.. although after the install is complete you will then need to update teh system and download a ton of updates, which is why the netinstall rules. The Netinstall has everything necessary for a bare install then downloads the current version of everything else you are installing, avoiding the after install huge update..

It's takes less time to install the entire system using the netinstall CD than it would to download the necessary ISO's full of outdated files to do the same thing and then have to update after..
