Graphic and Sound problem

Good afternoon peoples. I have got two very frustrating problems. The first problem is the graphic. I've recently installed Debian with the Debian net install cd on a Compaq Armada 3500(laptop) with a Intel Pentium 2, 192 mb ram and Chips C&T 69000 video. The problem with the graphic is that I only can get 640x480 and 800x600 resolution. In Windows 98SE/ME/2000 and XP the graphic works fine. The second problem is the sound. Debian doesen't recognize the soundcard and when I click on the soundicon in the right corner I get the following errormessage(I am swedish and the language of the os is Swedish so I am going to try to translate the errormessage as good as I can): No volumecontrolled GStreamer-modules and/or devices founded. Somebody know how to fix those problems? And sorry for my bad Engalish

Hi, I can't really help you since I don't know this computer, but while you wait for someone with the same hardware to answer you can have a look at this two websites :

http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/compaq.html

http://tuxmobil.org/compaq.html

It may give you useful hints.

Those links you posted did not give some useful hints. I found something about my laptop but that info was about RedHat. But I have
realized that my laptop doesn't like linux. I have tested many linux distros and I got same problems with all. So I guess I have to live with Windows

For video you need to install "xserver-xorg-video-chips".
In the Section "Device" you probably have now:
Driver "vesa" # or some such. Change to:
Driver "chips"

For sound (and above) post output of "lspci".
As a minimum, install alsa-base and alsa-utils and try alsaconf after that.
Then post output of "lsmod".
Then execute "alsamixer" from console and pump up volumes for at least "Master" and "PCM".
