going in circles with apt-get dependency error

running squeeze i just found apt-get install <prgm> returns dependency error & wont install anything.

i started with apt-get install apt-file & it errored with unmet dep & recommended apt-get -f install

ran that & it came back with more unmet dep.

e2fsprogs seems to figure prominently in the errors

i then tried running aptitude & told it look for broken & it found e2fsprogs & others but was unable to install with
basically the same unable to create .....e2fsprogs.mo.ppkg-new
below is the error msg that keeps popping up. anyone have any tips on how to fix?

Hi,

have done an
Code:
apt-get update
recently? If not, please do so and then try running
Code:
apt-get -f install
again.

Also, is there anything else we should know about this machine? Eg has it had any other problems recently? Have the packages been kept up to date?

Evo2.

thanks for the response.

evo2:
the sequence was, as i remember it, apt-get update, apt-get install moblin-sound-theme (was trying to get login spounds going),
that produced dep error, then apt-get -f install (more dep error with e2fsprogs mentioned). apt-get install e2fsprogs
(more dep errors & so on). by the way im doing all this from a root terminal.

re problems: only thing i noticed is that restart now goes to a login screen where it used to just reboot, i have to do 1/2 dozen extra clicks to get it to reboot. it is squeeze on my backup machine so doesn't get booted that often.
(i have multiple distros/systems on my computer, probably too many).

below is the output from the 2 commands you suggested today:

I think, if it were me, that I would run;
Code:
apt-get clean
To get rid of every thing in /var/cache/apt/archives and then run;
Code:
dpkt --configure -a
just to see what it throws up.

Ok, I think this is the real issue. From the df output we know your filesystem is not full, so we need to see what is going on here. Can you have a poke around under /usr/share/locale and see what is going on?
For example does /usr/share/locale/ca/LC_MESSAGES/ exist? If so what does it look like?
eg
Code:
stat /usr/share/locale/ca/LC_MESSAGES/
Does it contain any files?
Eg
Code:
ls -l /usr/share/locale/ca/LC_MESSAGES/
Can you create a file there?
Eg as root
Code:
echo foo > /usr/share/locale/ca/LC_MESSAGES/bar
If it the directory doesn't exist, up to what level do its parent directories exist, and what do they look like? Etc.

HTH,

Evo2.

come on evo2 at least read the answer of the op completly. Also its not using code tags. The directory /usr/share/locale/ca does not exists.

So lets recreate the locals with
Code:
dpkg-reconfigure locales
that should create the directory for us. Or maybe reinstall the local packages all together
Code:
apt-get reinstall locales
I also think widget has some point with apt-get clean. Also a apt-get upgrade should not hurt.

i tried evo2 & widget commands b4 i read todays post.
zhjim is right, there is no ca/LC-MESSAGES. in fact there is no /ca. i didn't notice it either when i ran the ls command the other day.

below is putput from evo2 commands:
-------------------
newbuild:/home/dave# stat /usr/share/locale/ca/LC_MESSAGES
stat: cannot stat `/usr/share/locale/ca/LC_MESSAGES': No such file or directory

newbuild:/home/dave# ls /usr/share/locale
en en_AU en@boldquot en_CA en_GB en_NZ en@quot en@shaw en_US en_US@piglatin locale.alias
--------------------
below is output from widget commands (there was none):
----------------
newbuild:/home/dave# apt-get clean
newbuild:/home/dave# dpkg --configure -a
------------------

i then tried zhjim suggestion but it didnt recognize & said ask for help, below is output:
---------------
newbuild:/home/dave# dpkg --reconfigure locales
dpkg: unknown option --reconfigure

Type dpkg --help for help about installing and deinstalling packages[*];
Use `dselect' or `aptitude' for user-friendly package management;
Type dpkg -Dhelp for a list of dpkg debug flag values;
Type dpkg --force-help for a list of forcing options;
Type dpkg-deb --help for help about manipulating *.deb files;
Type dpkg --license for copyright license and lack of warranty (GNU GPL)[*].
--------------------
closest i saw was configure, tried that & got:
------------------
newbuild:/home/dave# dpkg --configure locales
dpkg: error processing locales (--configure):
package locales is already installed and configured
Errors were encountered while processing:
locales

ahh, one of those things

its actally all one command
Code:
dpkg-reconfigure locales
not dpkg --reconfigure

it looked right , even when you said it wasn't working

Oh, you will need root, so add sudo or what ever

Edit:
thought I would add a little tip, something I like to call tab spamming
spam that tab key many times while typing on bash
hidden so as not to clog ( meh, no spoiler tags )
[spoiler]
Code:
sudo dp<tab><tab>
gets you something like this

thanks firerat, ill try that when i get back from errands.

also i just looked at squeeze on my other computer which is in much better condition (meaning i was able to get a login sound without a bunch of apt-get error msgs).

its /ust/share/locale has WAY more sub-dirs then the broken one including /ca/LC_MESSAGES.

by design,
Historically locales took up alot of space, so often they were only generated for what was needed

these days it probably makes little difference as we have much more space available

I don't really understand why it is insisting on ca locales

that didnt work.
ran reconfigure locales & selected everything. it installed somwe but also prodices errors like this for a lot of them:
----------------------

done

i them ran apt-get update & apt0get -f install aga in & got same error about unable to created /ca/......

so i made the dir & ran it again. now its complaining about the /cs/... dir!

below is the terminal output of what i did after the dpkg-reconfigure locales:

-----------------------------------
at this point i rebooted & restored my squeeze backup so im back where i started.

it really makes no sense that this thing wants a bunch of foreign languages to install e2fsprogs, which is a file system, right?

another thought: is there anything i could look at on my other computer, where squeeze works, that might give me a clue as to whats wrong/missing with this one?
