ftp client for debian

hey

i have been looking for a decent ftp client (gui). i was trying to install gftp using dpkg but it wasnt working... i downloaded all 4 of the .deb files i ran dpkg and it complained that it one of the other packages installed. so i installed that package which then complained that another package wasnt installed (this went on for all 4 packages)

is there an easier ftp client to install.... furthermore is there an easier way to install compressed files rather than throught the command line???

thanks

Well let's get you set straight first. You don't have to do the Redhat RPM dependency dance with Debian.

As root:

apt-cache search ftp | grep graphic

Gives me:

axyftp-gtk - A graphical ftp program with GTK interface

Then, I would do:

apt-get install axyftp-gtk

And it will install. You will have to do next to nothing. It just works.

This was for Stable on x86 above. I suggest you get comfortable with:

apt-cache search (package/name/program)

You'll then do apt-get install the packagename.

For the last question I strongly recommend synaptic:

apt-get install synaptic

Then call it with synaptic &

It's very easy to use and intuitive.

apt-get install will solve your dependency issues.

If you have KDE installed use Konqueror and in the address bar ftp://some.ftp.site if you want to login as a user at the site ftp://user_name@some.ftp.site, if you split the window before you login you can browse your files and have drag'n'drop into the ftp site.

try kpackage as root. It does dependency check for you though sometimes it is not quite stable
