Smile Etch install: dvd1 ok, dvd2 ? dvd3?

Hi !

I am making a Novice installation of Debian Etch 4.0 from DVD. I have the first DVD installed fine. Could someone please tell me the commands to install DVD's 2 and 3?

Also: I now have a Terminal, a Root Terminal and an X-Terminal as root?

It would be very helpful to know where to type the relevant commands.

Many thanks! :-)

You don't need to install DVD2,or DVD3,if you want to install some softwares on DVD2 and DVD3,just add what in /etc/apt/sources.list's
first line,then change 1 to 2,3.
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 r0 _Etch_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-1 20070407-12:15]/ etch contrib main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 r0 _Etch_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-2 20070407-12:15]/ etch contrib main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 r0 _Etch_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-3 20070407-12:15]/ etch contrib main
Then apt-get update.
That is OK!

You need to get a basic understanding of how a Debian installation works. Here's an overview.

You may not need to install anything from the subsequent DVDs, but you do need to get Xwindows working.

You don't *install* them, you just let your system scan the dvds to see what packages are on it.

All you need to do is open a terminal Applications>>Accessories>>Terminal and then
type in the command
su
(hit enter, put in the password, hit enter)
type in the command
apt-cdrom add
(hit enter)
It will ask you to insert the CD/DVD to scan and hit enter
It will scan it then it is finished until you want to install something.

When you want to install something you either use synaptic (Desktop>>Administration>>Synaptic) or you use the terminal again and use the command apt-get install packagename and when it needs the CD/DVD it will ask for it.

Thanks to yourself and rickh!! It is now quite clear to me that I should stick to the progeny before I approach the parents. As always (well nearly) with Linux, It's been enjoyable.

Thanks very much for your time. All the best!
