Unhappy Cant Install Etch with a 2.6 kernel?

I dont know what to do, i keep trying to give newer versions of Debian a try (Etch) but any installer that usses the 2.6 kernel for debian wont get past the part where it probes your hardware (right after the 3 first selections, for area, language, etc) It just hangs, and i think i saw it say it was loading a generic ide controller.

I use a adaptec AHA-2940U2B SCSI Controller. if i select a 2.4 kernel it works and i see it load some adaptec aic7xxx driver.

I Dont need this enough to live with a 2.4 kernel though, please tell me there is a way to get this to install?

I see there is boot options for SCSI cards, multiple adaptec options, but i have no idea which :/ it isnt like in Slackwear where all i had to do was run "adaptec.s" :/

Help ><

Have you tried installing with the 2.4 kernel and then aptitude install kernel-image-2.6-386 (or linux-image-2.6-386 for etch/sid)? Then update /boot/grub/menu.lst and boot to the new kernel (keep the old working one around). Try booting the new kernel and see what errors you get. Maybe that'll help pin down the root of the error...
