You are running a production server using Debian testing why?

Use the 'old' SGD images from that site, yes. If your hardware is capable of booting from that Flash disk, by all means, use it

After d/l'ing and copying that, try the grub-legacy package first.

Yeah, Like I mentioned earlier I dont have any burner at the moment. But I can try the usb memory stick version.
But the usb memory stick tutorial uses grub(1) in the tutorial, so I'm a bit stuck with this!

Like this for instance:

Code:
grub
grub>device (hd3) /dev/sdb
grub>root (hd3,0)
grub>setup (hd3)

Be aware, craigevil is a wizard, at least that is my take on reading his posts here and on the debian forums - it is not wise to upset wizards - just answer his question(s) and I am sure that he can help. Incidentally, I also wondered why you appear to be using GRUB2 and a 2.6.32 kernel. [Irony] I understand that the 2.6.33 has just been released [/Irony] Finally, could you define a semi-production server for me.

Yeah well

My local server has always been a backup server when we (our tiny company) had a server in a dedicated hosting place.
The main server was running stable software and the backup server was running testing. Easy to understand this.
Then some personal stuff got around and we removed the server from the dedicated place and some minor stuff was moved to the backup server, still running testing.
This was going great for several years until this week when I did and big boo-boo and had to take the server down and rush in new and fresh hardware. (The hardware swap was due this week anyway)
So, then I had to get the new server up and running quickly and I continued to run testing, since I had to hard copy /var/lib/somestuff from the downed server to the new one, included /etc/somestuff and /var/www. And I figured this was much easier with equal server programs.
And I never had any problems with Grub2 in the past. Only this week of course. And it's not that big of problem. It's mostly annoying!

Hope this will clear things up.

Edit: Semi-production means in this case: A few websites with db and a few mail accounts.
Edit2: Testing NOT unstable

Am I correct in my understanding that the new server hasn't functioned properly yet? You may be quicker in fixing this by re-installing the server with Debian Stable (and carefully avoiding the Grub2 stuff). Once that's done, copy the stuff from the old harddrive (or your backup) to the new server. Only data, no applications, these should be properly re-installed.

Yeah, but since grub2 is still in testing so I dont see why?
And I had a hell of a week with fixing databases and what not, so its only this fine tuning left.
Now about everything is up and running like it was on the old server. I was down 36 hours this week and I think that is about enough. And my customers is about to wake up in a few hours anyways
I'm burning the midnight oil like crazy this week.

Is there any way I can copy my */dev/sda1* to my 16gb usb stick now, to make that one boot in case of emergency? There is plenty room for that now.

Yes, but you'd need to do a full install process onto the USB stick. Plug it in your XP-PC, reboot from the install disk, point the installer to the USB stick and away you go. Then copy all data over to the USB stick, hoping it all fits
