duplex settings

where can i set the duplex settings for my interfaces, they can't seem to handle auto-negotiation.
Code:
Sep 19 02:19:43 www kernel: eth0: Setting half-duplex based on MII #1 link partner capability of 0000.
Sep 19 02:19:53 www kernel: eth0: Setting full-duplex based on MII #1 link partner capability of 45e1.
Sep 19 06:49:21 www kernel: eth0: Setting half-duplex based on MII #1 link partner capability of 0000.
Sep 19 06:58:00 www kernel: eth0: Setting full-duplex based on MII #1 link partner capability of 45e1.
Im guessing /etc/network/interfaces, but i can't find any info about duplex for that file :S

If the card is supported by it then you can use the ethtool package to set that.

just remember if you FORCE full duplex on the eth interface the switch will not be able to auto-negotiate and will default to Half duplex for that port.. if the switchport has one speed duplex setting and the eth interface a different speed duplex setting it won't work well if at all and may affect the overall performance of your network.

when forcing speed duplex settings on an interface you need to be able to program the switch for the same settings meaning you need a managed switch. otherwise you will only be able to force your eth interface to whatever spped you want at Half duplex to get it working..

Ahh the joys of auto-negotiation

i know and my linksys is unmanaged atleast as a switch. But i just put another 100mbit switch beetween my router and my server. Guess it's a firmware bug or something in the linksys box or the ethernet card as the problem is only on that exact computer.

thanks anyway guys..

wishlist for christmas: cisco 6509
