digital camera problems with 2.6.12 kernel -Resolved-

Hello, I have a casio exilim digital camera and am unable to connect to the camera using either gtkam or digikam. When attempting to connect to the camera using either I get the same message:

gp_port_write: Resource temporarily unavailable

gtkam autodetects the camera as 'USB PTP Class Camera'
digikam autodetects the camera as the same thing, and when I attempt to connect is when I get the gp_port_write message above.

Below is the output of my /proc/bus/usb/devices

is it supposed to work at all?

Quote:
Casio recent cameras all use USB Mass Storage device. Unfortunately, their implementation is substandard.
look here for some info on your setup and hopefully a solution: http://www.harald-schreiber.de/

Yes it is supposed to work. From what I understand the camera is supported by my kernel. Here is another oddity. I was where I have the program 'showfoto' installed and tried it. It mounted /dev/sdb1 to /media/sdb1 and I am able to view the pictures off the camera. I can also browse /media/sdb1 from my file manager and get the pictures that way. I guess this has become more of a digikam and gtkam problem than a system problem. I can not seem to figure out why these programs can not access my camera? Both are able to auto detect it but can not connect to it. I have tried it with /dev/sdb1 mounted and unmounted, anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Okay, once realizing it was a digikam problem I did some searching and found another thread where the problem is the same as mine. I basically had to mount the camera using the following;

mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /mnt/camera

I then told digikam that the camera was a usb mass storage device - from the add camera option. Works like a charm.

However, the camera is really for my wife and she is not going to *want* to do this each time. How do I force the camera to mount to /mnt/camera everytime I plug it in? Or force it to mount anywhere each time? Thanks in advance

Just to answer my own questions and to hopefully help others in the future, I was able to install usbmount via apt-get. Once installed, I turned my camera on and it automounted to /media/usb0, from there i told digikam that mount location and it works.

A suggestion with wife, girlfriend etc.

I made a tiny alias for my wife
Code:
alias canon='gphoto2 --get-all-files'
(it is a canon PS type of camera). She is very happy with it and even did not want to try gtkam when I introduced it for her. So a small script occasionally would perhaps work well.

Best,
Ott
