dhcp fails at install

When I install by typing bf24 at boot, then get to "configure the network" my DCHP fails. When I install the older kernel, pressing return at boot, my DHCP works fine. Also when I use knoppix it, also fails DHCP, the reason I say this is, maybe because it also uses a newer kernel?

Below is an excerpt from linux isos.org
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most people should be able to boot from the first CD. If you need newer hardware support, or ReiserFS or ext3, you'll want the bf2.4 CD to boot plus Disc 1.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Am I supposed to be loading drivers off disk 5(bf2.4), like my network card? My computer is about one year old, so you would think bf2.4 would work better, but it is not.

MY QUESTION, how can I get my DCHP to work? Or I would be happy to listen to any advice you may have

You all have a nice day.

I had a simillar problem with kernel 2.4.16 and with kernel 2.4 18 only to find out that the dhcp-client package was the one to be blamed.

After installing the dhcp-client3 package I didn't the problem anymore. As a work-around to the dhcp-client I used pump (client made by redhat - is packaged) and made a /etc/init.d/pump script that started pump (using update-rc.d)

I hope this helps, although I think that you were sugeting you were dealing with a kernel problem...

You can just install the base system off the CD and then configure the dhcp client later and install everything with apt-get.
