Debian11 with grafic card Radeon [1002:6611] : screen not reactive at boot

Hello,
on an HP 600 SFF 4 PC, the screen with Debian11 comes up at boot. But the user input field (for the password) dont appear. And the mouse is not reactive. By clicking on some HDMI switch, the system recover and the user field appear.
That is weird.
If anybody has an idea, then I would appreciate any input.

Update:
- i915 was blacklisted during previous tests/works: the blacklisting is now taken away. warm reboot this morning was straight and perfect. I monitore if it is stable. positive side effect, a codec error (see below) is gone.

Few data from dmesg below and Xorg are in the attachment.

dmesg

Please look at your dmesg output, maybe
Code:
dmesg | grep firmware
Debian defaults to free no non-free nor contrib repos and if you get hits for missing intel fw ....then read
https://unix.stackexchange.com/quest...or-module-i915

You may not want non-free repo....but remember that only applies if your i915 needs firmware (possible)

2) Also look at your local user xsession-errors file please

3) I went looking for the specs of your PC but came up with variants
https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c06055178#AbT4

I am sure you know i915 means Intel but your xorg shows radeon.pcie_gen2=0 type kernel strings which do not make sense to me?

Both logs show the kernel command line contains nomodeset. This primer explains its significance. It is a severe impediment to optimal graphics operation. It could be that the only thing you need to do is remove it. First, strike the E key at the Grub menu to remove it for that one boot before proceeding, to see if that is all that is needed. If that proves to be true, and you find it in /etc/default/grub, remove it, then regenerate grub.cfg:
Code:
sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
I have what appears to be the same gfxcard. It works as expected with Debian 11 here:

nomodeset was used during a try one week ago. Sorry I had given the bad Xorg.logs. No-one appear anymore.

sorry I meant dot file for xsessions....unhide hidden files in file manager or
Code:
cat .xsession-errors
Ok so you appear to have onboard gfx using intel = i915
and a gfx card for radeon.

blacklisting the i915....is if you intend to use the radeon and that will explain your kernel parameter at boot for radeon stuff.

but which graphics do you want?
In your first post....I inferred you liked the i915. But you had not set a bios to disable your pci card for radeon nor blacklisted the modules
amdgpu, radeon or ati.

depending on your bios....you may be able to disable onboard (intel) or disable pci (radeon)

You can see both video chipsets appear to need firmware.

Because you have a choice....choose one....then mod your /etc/default/grub
to remove the "other cards preferences" at the moment they are radeon stuff

ie, if i915 appears stable for you....remove radeon stuff and then use root powers to
Code:
update-grub
Next create a file to blacklist one module per line, modules that would enable and use radeon card.
Suggest you call it
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
contents
blacklist ati
blacklist radeon
blacklist amdgpu

I would not blacklist frambebuffer or vesa....they are a fallback for some cards.

full reboot to test.

#######################

If you prefer radeon, find the file you altered and re-enable blacklist i915 or if you deleted it create a new file with these contents
blacklist i915

###################
Note that although mrmazda has the same ids for radeon, his supplier is HP while yours is Dell. I am not sure if that is important. But I do agree remove nomodeset from your /etc/default/grub for the kernel line.

Then on full reboot you should see the same inxi output of mrmazda showing loaded: modesetting

I hope that makes sense.

You should be able to disable KMS for only the Intel IGP by appending to the kernel command line instead of nomodeset, the following: i915.modeset=0. This way the modesetting DIX display driver won't support the IGP, but be free to support the AMD, and the amdgpu DDX would also support the AMD. If you want to disable the AMD instead of the IGP, then instead of i915.modeset=0, use amdgpu.modeset=0 and/or radeon.modeset=0. These methods don't depend on messing with blacklists.

I confirm: I dont want to use the i915. Only the AMD card for connecting 1 or 2 screens.

latest boot (a bit bumpy: I had to switch several hdmi switch for the system to show anything on 2 screens):

dmesg | egrep 'amdgpu'
Quote:

Arch wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AMDGPU says
Quote:
It is possible it loads, but late, after the X server requires it. In this case:

See Kernel mode setting#Early KMS start.
My current thoughts is amdgpu KMS could be too late. I have to think more. Any advice/comment is welcome.

Your AMD card is around 9 years older than the onboard graphics if my research is correct. The IGP ought to be able to outperform that AMD card, and run cooler using less electricity.

The IGP has only 1 output.
The card has 2 outputs.
What type of card would you recommend? Buying a new one is coming seriously in mind since this is a pain to start the PC (2 HDMI output; no gaming; only sometime 3D construction).
I already tried to ask HP what type of card they would recommend but this is nearly impossible to reach them. I gave up. Any card recommendation here is welcome.

This is what I ordered https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B07...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This was soo old? (was not cheap)

That should be just fine. If the current market wasn't so limited of choices, or prices so high, you might have replaced the motherboard with one that has 3-4 video outputs for less than a graphics card. Last 4 motherboards I built with each came with 4 video outputs, 2 boards for Intel, 2 boards for AMD: DP & HDMI & DVI & VGA.

I found on a new HP doc following recommendation:
- HP AMD Radeon RX550X 4GB LP DP Card or
- LENOVO GeForce GT 730, 2000 GB
(low profile cards).
For the reason I am like a blind person looking at colored parts, I ask here for any recommendation (this is clear: the cheapest is LENOVO; however if the arguments against the LENOVO card are high, I will buy the HP card).

Or another idea: I placed a (4x) RS232 PCI card into the PC. Perhaps that card is now disturbing the whole system and I should place a new voltage alimentation? Perhaps that was not Debian11 which messed up my whole graphic system.

In general, AMD cards require less admin involvement. Most NVidia users use NVidia's non-FOSS (proprietary drivers), which require maintenance at kernel upgrade and other times that other GPUs do not. If you expect to be committed to and/or content with performance from FOSS drivers, then either card should be fine.

New card is in the PC. First boot was weird: user came but giving the password, it asked again the user and again and again.
No error could be seen in a text mode.

Then at a second boot it was fine. No error. Hopefully the topic is closed and all future boots will be good and straight. Looks fine so far.
