Debian printer Epson Stylus color 480 Setup on kernel 2.4.18-bf2.4

Hi , I have tried to setup my printer by installing GIMP1.2-print and APSFILTER by using APT-GET and everything run smooth.

My printer is Epson Stylus Color 480.

by using apsfilterconfig, I can print the test page successfully also.

Now, the problem comes when I try to print a simple document using Kword.

the print option can detect my printer name, but the printer result was garbage, like: error: /typecheck in --closefile, operand stack bla bla bla...

Can any one tell me what is wrong with this problem?

Thanks

Edit: Surprisingly I can print an image using GIMP, although it took a minute or more to start printing.

I run dmesg and It detected my Printer:

parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778) [PCSPP, TRISTATE]
parport0: Printer, EPSON Stylus Color 480
parport_pc: VIA 686A parallel port: io=0x378
lp0: using parport0 (polling)

I've just tried to print a txt file from console:

cat (file.txt) > /dev/lp0

it works!!, but the paper (A4) was stuck half way, so I have to take it out forcely.
Does this mean that it's the driver problem?
I've tried to print using RH9, no problem.

any idea?

Have you tried to (re)configure LPRng using KDE's printer setup tool?

I guess much more common way to set up printer in Debian is using CUPS instead of Apsfilter + LPRng.

Hi Dead Parrot,

Thank you so much for your advice....
I've just reconfigure the printer by using CUPS.

I searched google found this CUPS mini howto:

Setting Up CUPS under Debian GNU/Linux

I use Apt-get to download it, add the printer using Kprinter, test page...thats it...it can print successfully on Kedit.

again..Thanks, I appreciate it.
