hi guys, i just downloaded the openshot video update but it tells me that it cannot import the files on my iphone which are .mov files. yet after a bit of research the update is claiming it can now import ad use .mov files. I know that for the sake of stability that debian isnt particularly known for jumping on the latest and greatest but it says in the update release files that .mov are available for ubuntu.... and isnt ubuntu built on debian? so in theory shouldnt it work? shouldnt i be able to import .mov files into the update? or am i missing the point?somewhere?
any pointers would be appreciated.

I have the iPhone 5 and I am connecting it via usb. I am simply using the import command in openshot. I installed openshot from the directions on their home page so I would get the most recent update that is apparently free of bugs.
I have looked around the web but I haven't seen anything directly addressing this issue. It makes me think it's a user error on my behalf or a debian none- free issue. I just don't know enough about it to troubleshoot it myself. Thanks for any advise you can send my way.
i installed the mplayer as it said on one website that there were a lot of codecs? that were needed for mp3s and other file formats. I simply did the drag and drop method and I also did the import files. it just constantly says 'this file type is not supported by open shot'.
I can mount the iphone, I can see all the files and they are availale for import (not greyed out) but as son as i click on it i get the error message.
what troubles are you having ?; are you unable to copy a video file from the device to your pc (rhythmbox, banshee, gtkpod, ... mite work) ?
or are you unable to play the video file from the pc (vlc tends to have the best support for most codecs/containers) ?

Are you sure? I have both available on my installs and a quick look at the deb-multimedia website shows they don't seem to be empty packages.
As to installing almost anything under Debian I would always suggest installing the package from the repositories as the first option as Debian does do some things a little differently occasionally and there will be a lot more support available via either a simple google or a request on a forum like this.
If, of course, the version from the repositories (including backports perhaps) is too old then I'd say it's time to look to installing some other way.
I really don't recall whether I needed w64codecs installed to play .mov files or not but I'm almost certain I needed something non-free and possibly from the deb-multimedia repositories to do so (I would also expect that whatever package it may be would be installed if one were to choose non-free packages in an Ubuntu or other Debian derivative install even if it's from deb-multimedia).
However, going back to my point about using the repositories -- if you don't know whether you even installed something properly how are you going to know what to add to it to fix any issues?

Reason: typo's
I know 273, you are completely right. I've probably messed it up. I'm practicing on the synaptic package manager and updating the sources.list file so god knows what I have done!?. Which isn't the end of the world because I am changing my drive to ssd on Thursday and fitting 8 gigs of ram. I'm not saving anything from this current session but it would be nice to know what I'm doing. I know you ve followed some of my other posts and you know that I'm not the most natural linux guy, but I'm just trying as hard as I can to learn a who,e bunch of stuff then I don't mess up my PC once I have the ssd installed.
I really need this pc for music and not video but it would be helpful to know how to install and use it for future.
I'm going to have a look at the link posted by Schneidz and see if I can learn anything from that.
One thing I'm wondering after following schneidz link...... Is the problem that the iPhone won't transfer .mov files to a linux operating system or...... is the problem that the openshot video editor won't import them into its file manager?
If the first option is correct then that would mean that once I get the files onto the computer the openshot video editor with play them back faithfully. I'm not sure which one it is.
I've been an iPhone user for the past 5 years at least and a Linux user around the same amount of time. Unfortunately the 2 don't mingle well. I had luck transferring from Linux to iPhone only when A) the iPhone was never updated to the current iOS version but then I'm limiting the phones functionality or B) with a jail broken iPhone you then have full control of the inner workings and can manipulate the file system, at that point SSH into the device and have at it.
Long story short it's usually more trouble than it's worth. I love the iPhone performance and endurance but then your locked into proprietary yin yang. I like the droids because they are open but I see too many hardware issues and power/battery problems. I'm torn.
Thank you dman58. That's enough confirmation for me. I'll use a jfc camera instead. I'll try it out tonight and see if I can get the video from the jvc camera. I haven't a clue what format the jvc uses. But at least I now know that the whole iphone to linux thing is not worth the bother. Thank you my friend.
