I have just installed cups and suggested packages running debian sarge with a fresh upgrade minus the kernel so far.
I can open a browser window to localhost:631 no problem. The problem is that unlike in the past, my printer isn't listed in the 'add printer' configuration.
I'm just wondering how to trouble shoot this. How can a check to see if I even have parallel support enabled? If I'm wrong in thinking that might be the problem, where should I start and/or check?

If you have the file /dev/lp0, then your Debian system should support parallel port.
The LinuxPrinting.org page that utanja's link points to suggests that a driver for your printer is included in GhostScript, so you should check that the gs-esp package is installed.
Edit:
Another (better?) way to check which device drivers are currently configured into the kernel is to do "cat /proc/devices". You should see lp in the device list that this command outputs.

I have it set up and ready to go, just can't get anything to print out yet. I'll keep messing with it. If anyone has a suggestion let me know.
