Compile new Kernel

Hi all
Now i have just installed Debian Lenny
it looks great
Now it is time for a new kernel installation
I have a new laptop and i must have on minimum kernel 2.6.28 to make my Wlan work
so I intended to install 2.6.30
if any body can give me some tutorials on how to do so?
and is it a good idea to do so ?
thanks in advance

Check out the debian wiki since you are better off compiing the kernel "debian way" and not the usual traditional way , else you could get in trouble.

If you need the 2.6.30 kernel get it from Backports:

http://packages.debian.org/lenny-bac...6.30-bpo.1-686
http://www.backports.org/dokuwiki/doku.php

Follow the instructions link for how to add the repository to your /etc/apt/sources.list
Then install with apt.Job done.
Unless you want to learn to compile your own kernels of course.

ok thx
i compiled kernel 2.6 a long time ago on Slackware 10.1
it took a long time and effort
i think packport will be more easier and better, right?
thats what i will do
add this "deb http://www.backports.org/debian lenny-backports main" to /etc/apt/sources.list
then make
"apt-get install linux-image-2.6.30-bpo.1-686_2.6.30-6~bpo50+1_i386.deb"
is that correct?

Nearly.Here's how i'd do it:

Add this line to your /etc/apt/sources.list:

Code:
deb http://www.backports.org/debian lenny-backports main contrib non-free
Then aptitude update, then aptitude keep-all(if you have been using apt-get previously).

You'll then get a warning message about missing keys,to stop this do:

Code:
aptitude install debian-backports-keyring
Now do aptitude update again, and you should have no more errors.

Now install the kernel package with the following command:

Code:
aptitude -t lenny-backports install linux-image-2.6.30-bpo.1-686
Reboot into the new kernel!.

Don't.
It's good practice to have another working kernel to boot into, just in case you have problems with the new one.

Have a look at Wicd from Backports again:

http://packages.debian.org/lenny-backports/wicd

This is what many people recommend, can't say i've tried myself as i don't use wireless.

Disagree big time here... I've compiled and installed quite a few kernels on Debian using the make sequence and they never gave me trouble, other than of my own making. So effectively I'd have to classify your remark as FUD... :-\
