Cannot start HAL

I have installed Sarge with kernel 2.6.17.13.
After installing kernel 2.6.18 with a few modifications in the configuration I can no longer start HAL.
Please see the following
Code:
debian:~# killall hald
hald: no process killed
debian:~# /usr/sbin/hald --daemon=no --verbose=yes
19:15:35.186 [I] hald.c:394: hal 0.4.7
19:15:35.187 [I] hald.c:398: Will not daemonize
19:15:35.222 [I] linux/osspec.c:219: Mountpoint for sysfs is /sys
Segmentation fault
debian:~#

Maybe you'd like to take the modifications out one by one, and see after which it starts working? That's a way if you can't figure anything else out and have time compiling new kernels..
