Can't get gnome 2.8

Running Debian sarge and using Gnome.

Have 2 questions regarding Gnome:

1) I accidentally deleted the "Start here" icon from my desktop How can it be restored?

2) My Gnome version is 2.6. For some reason I can't upgrade to version 2.8. Tried apt-get install gnome, apt-get -t unstable install gnome (I do have an unstable source in my sources.list) - in both cases it (apt) says I have the newest gnome version.
as I understand gnome 2.8 is available in unstable and in testing, so how can I get my hands on it?

Thanks.

gnome 2.8 has just moved to sid, it isn't in sarge yet. That's why you can't get it, it's not been deemed testing yet.

the start here icon is kinda pointless, it is just a shortcut to what in windows would be a "control panel". You can still configure all that stuff by going to your menus and system tools or desktop preferences, etc.

Thanks,

Why then can't I get the unstable version (apt-get -t unstable install)?

About the start-here thing, I'm just curious how can it be restored...

Just guessing here, but it may be that there are some dependancies for 2.8 that you do not have in sarge, and that could be causing all kinds of problems.

It seems Debian will be moving gnome 2.8 into testing:

Just be patient, and I don't recommended mixing testing and unstable... You'll most likely get very undesireable results.

Thanks,

What are the possible issues with a mixed system?

If one does run into some problems with a mixed system (i.e. having an 'unstable' Gnome on a 'testing' system), how can one go back to a non-mixed system? Namely is it enough to reinstall Gnome, or are there specific parts of Gnome that should be reinstalled?

I got into trouble with a mixed system a while ago. Lots of library conflicts, things not working as expected. Just messy. I fixed it by moving my whole system to unstable. Then I changed the sources.list to testing, after a month or so I started getting new packages in testing again, and now I'm fully back to testing and solid as a rock.
