Bootloader not at MBR

I am re-installing Debian on hdb...it can have the whole drive.
I want to have the bootloader at root and not in the MBR at hda and then I can use the bootloader of the other distro to boot Debian. I got into such a tangle with a corrupted MBR before by overwriting an installed one that I won't go that route again.
I remember when installing Debian before being given no option about the grub but perhaps I missed it and perhaps I took the non-custom installation choice.
My question is does anybody remember which options to take in order to get the bootloader at root?

Thanks

It does ask during install..

I don't know of any specific screenshots for your question, but if you choose no it should give you a change to select an alternate location such as a partition or floppy disk.

I installed so many distros trying them out that I can't remember exactly but I think I did encounter this screen and saying no doesn't give you any other options.
I'll try anyway and post back here. Thanks.
