Frugality, frugality, frugality, I can appreciate it (great-great-grandfather William came from somewhere near Edinburgh).
Sometimes you just need hardcopy, then you must either obtain a book or print something from the 'net. It is usually cheaper to buy than print, unless someone else is paying for the printer & its supplies. Or better yet, have the best of both worlds: $0
and hard copy. Become a book reviewer. Also, buy used or 1 edition back; in many cases this is very cost effective.
So, assuming you just
have to have something in book form ...
If I were to recommend just _one_ book to a command line oriented beginner, it would
Linux in a Nutshell (O'Reilly). One way to save $ is to buy an older edition 2nd hand. I have 3 copies: 2nd, 3rd, & 4th eds. All are very useful, perhaps the used 3rd is the best value -- there was a significant improvement in organization between 2 & 3. (All command references are now grouped in 1 alphabetical chapter.)
The Linux Cookbook (No Starch Press) is really good, too. Either edition, although the 2nd is almost 2ce as long as the 1st. (I got #1 used, & #2 was a birthday present...)
Avoid
Learning Debian GNU/Linux (O'Reilly), it's out of date, out of print, & was more about GNU/Linux than Debian anyway.
Since you are going to "set up a file server using Debian and Samba", consider
Linux Network Administrators Guide, the 1st 2 editions available either as O'Reilly books or on the web:
http://www.faqs.org/docs/linux_network/ http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/linag2/book/
Unfortunately, the 3rd ed., published this year, is not (yet) available.
The Official Samba-3 HOWTO and Reference Guide, published by Prentice Hall PTR, and also available on the web:
http://us2.samba.org/samba/docs/man/...TO-Collection/
http://us2.samba.org/samba/docs/Samb...Collection.pdf
also,
Samba-3 by Example: Practical Exercises to Successful Deployment, again published by Prentice Hall PTR, and also available on the web:
http://us2.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/ http://us2.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-Guide.pdf
Note -- the printed versions have recently diverged from the on-line versions.
The 2 Samba books are quite deep, & expensive @ retail, so it is good that you use them on-line or d/l the .pdf before you have to commit to purchase.
If you decide to buy either of the Samba books, you may well be supporting the project through royalties paid to Terpstra, Vernooij, & Carter who are members of the Samba team.
I googled:
"Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 Bible" review
& got some interesting results. The book looks promising, why not ask for review copy? I think I will. Then post a review on this site.
This is much longer than I intended, but I hope helpful. Thanks for turning me on to
Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 Bible, it
looks very promosing, but it isn't released yet & I have no personal experience w/ the publisher.
