bad sources.list

Currently I have:

Quote:
deb ftp://mir1.ovh.net/debian/ etch main
deb-src ftp://mir1.ovh.net/debian/ etch main

deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main

deb http://packages.dotdeb.org stable all
deb-src http://packages.dotdeb.org stable all

deb http://people.debian.org/~dexter php5 sarge
deb-src http://people.debian.org/~dexter php5 sarge

But everytime I try to install or upgrade the box, I get errors like:

Quote:
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
E: Could not open file /var/lib/apt/lists/people.debian.org_%7edexter_dists_php5_sarge_source_Sources - open (2 No such file or directory)

I've noticed there sin't a people.debian.org etc file in the directory /var/lib/apt/lists/. I suspect I just have a bad sources list though, what works for you? And how do I find out if I have Sarge Debian or Horny Monkey or Itchy Gibbon or whatever?

To know what you are running..

cat /etc/issue
cat /etc/debian_version

But anyway, you can't remember what CD you put in your cd player?
Don't install while drinking! ;-)

For the error:

Look here:
http://people.debian.org/~dexter/dists/all/

So
deb http://people.debian.org/~dexter php5 sarge
deb-src http://people.debian.org/~dexter php5 sarge

Should be (In case you are really running sarge, which actually you shouldn't)

deb http://people.debian.org/~dexter all sarge
deb-src http://people.debian.org/~dexter all sarge

Anyway, your sources.list is indeed a mess (mixing old-stable sarge with new stable etch), figure out first what release you have.

Ok.

Why do you need these php5 lines from dexter? I would suggest removing them entierly.

=>

deb ftp://mir1.ovh.net/debian/ etch main non-free contrib
#deb-src ftp://mir1.ovh.net/debian/ etch main non-free contrib
deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates etch main non-free contrib
#deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main

#deb http://packages.dotdeb.org stable all
#deb-src http://packages.dotdeb.org stable all
#deb http://people.debian.org/~dexter php5 sarge
#deb-src http://people.debian.org/~dexter php5 sarge

php5 is available in normal repos.

Code:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

The Debian installation is provided by my dedicated server provider, you can install in the control panel and this sourcelist is how the server was setup, so I really don't know why the php5 lines are included.

I'll try with just the two lines you suggest, thanks again.
