ati in Etch

I am not able to install the ati driver. I am running etch with 2.6.15 kernel. I was trying install ati drive but getting error message. I am copying the whole script below:-

Hello.
I have a sneaky suspicion that something is wrong with either ATi's driver or a broken package in Etch, because I also experienced weird errors trying to install Ati's latest driver the way Ati instructs.
Anyways, I succeded using method 2 described on this page:

Good luck. Remember to remove everything fglrx-related before you try your luck with method 2.

BTW, with the kind help from Happy Tux, I wrote a temporary line in my sources list to debian sid/unstable and downloaded the 2.6.17-1 kernel and reconfigured/edited xorg.conf which solved my problems. Hope it works for you too.

I think the linux driver on the ati website is outdated or it just caused problems in my pc. :S

Note:
glxgears is no longer released n the glx core packages because the development team has this crazy notion that it isn't a benchmarking tool (yeah, it isn't, but it always gets used as one...)... you have to install it seperately...

I was trying to install kernel 2.6.17 after dist upgrade,but couldn't find the package in the unstable. I have seen it few days back. It is not there anymore.
Any suggestion of of other options of installing ati driver.

If you cant find the kernel on sid, I think you should use another mirror. Did you 'apt-get update'? if you still cant find it there, there is a good chance the kernel was passed to etch from sid.

I checked in Debian offician website. THe kernel 2.6.17 not there. I installed etch through netinstall. So, there is no chance that I will not be able to update to 2.6.17.

My "black screen" problem seems to come from missing packages. After running apt-get install module-assistant build-essential fakeroot dh-make debconf under Etch one or more of the packages that get installed alongside those packages above seems to have solved my problem.
I suspect it to be libstdc++5; I remember seeing a error message involving that package somewhere.

You were right. The kernel seems to have disapeared. And so has my debian

. I keep getting this initramfs thing on boot. I probably screwd up again while installing ubuntu on a separate drive. I can send you the kernel package if you want and if i could figure out how to.

I removed the 8.27.8 ati driver and installed the new 8.28.8 ati driver. The output of Xorg.0.log is below:-

Did you edit your xorg.conf file? Sounds like you need to create a new device section, point it to the driver, etc. Maybe the ati scripts change the name of the driver or device and did not update the xorg.conf file. So basically X is trying to load an old driver that is no longer there or is listed with a different name.
