Assign a domain name to my server?

Hello! I just set up a Debian server on a static IP address. I have a web server and mail server installed on this machine and would like to take a domain I have on GoDaddy and use it for this server. How would I go about doing this with a static IP?

I would start by setting the hostname on your server correctly to match what you have registered. (important for proper email server functionality) http://www.cpqlinux.com/hostname.html

the rest is just setting up the A and MX records properly in your Godaddy web portal to point to the static IP of your server.

I've set up the A record correctly, but what would I set my MX records to? I try to set it to my static IP but apparently that doesn't work and you aren't supposed to do that.. Would I set my MX records to point to my domain name?

the MX record should point to the name of the server not the IP address..

Code:
user@it-etch:~$ dig mx google.com

; <<>> DiG 9.3.4 <<>> mx google.com
;; global options: printcmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 17067

google.com. 10800 IN MX 10 smtp2.google.com.
google.com. 10800 IN MX 10 smtp3.google.com.

;; ADDITIONAL SECTION:

smtp1.google.com. 3600 IN A 72.14.203.25
smtp2.google.com. 3600 IN A 64.233.167.25
smtp3.google.com. 3600 IN A 64.233.183.25
Google has an A record for each mail server.
Google has an MX record pointing to each server name.
Google has all their mail servers set to the same weight or priority (10)

Does that help ?

So basically, seems how I only have one static IP address and I'm hosting my website and mail server on the same box.. I go into GoDaddy's Total DNS tool, set the A to my static IP and the MX record to my domain name..

I have that setup right now, just waiting for the mx records to resolve.

well if your A record is www.yourdomain.com
you would also register your MX record to www.yourdomain.com
