aptitude-gtk menu options don't work

hi,

I'm using squeeze and my updates are all updated. Aptitude-gtk is at 0.6.3-2 . My menu icons, like 'Update', 'Packages', and 'Preview' don't work. Luckily the buttons at the bottom of the screen, like 'Fix Manually' and 'Upgrade', still work. In this way the application is still useful. I can still search for things, and I can right-click with the mouse to mark packages for installation or removal. Then I use the buttons at the bottom of the screen to finish the work. BUT the menu icons , and come to think of it, options in the menus, don't work. Does anyone else have this problem? I went through the bug page on the debian site but I cannot find my problem. Thanks.

update and install problems

yeah, i had the same thing when I was using squeeze a few months ago. The only solution I ever found ( and nobody stepped up to help me either) was to use cli: apt-get which i have come to prefer over aptitude and synaptic. Once I had everything setup using synaptic to find packages and apt-get to install them or using the "deb balhblahblah" command to add repos until i had everything setup pretty
then I just used apt-get to keep everything good. If I had stayed with debian ( i really wanted to but the nVidia cards i run were really wonky and the time i was spending getting it fixed was more than i could afford at the time so i switched to fedora, my old love)

So, i know it is not the answer you wanted but a lazy work around instead. The solution will probably float up to you from unstable in a month or so.... Debian is like that.

Another, better, solution might be to reinstall and setup stable (Lenny), make sure that is working alright and then add the squeeze repos to apt. When you find something that broke you have followed a process that Debian devs understand and appreciate and you can document the change, which they need. This is undoubtedly the best solution, but it is tedious and shows a devotion to Debian longterm, a good thing no doubt.

Thanks for the reply. The cli still works for aptitude. 'aptitude update', 'aptitude safe-upgrade', etc. I prefer aptitude for the command line, and I only wanted to try out aptitude-gtk because aptitude itself is recommended by the debian devs. I guess it's lazy to want a gui for stuff like package management. Anyway, it's testing, so I guess you have to expect this kind of thing now and then. Thanks again.
