Except Synaptic is an ineffective toy which tries to be a generic all things to all distributions. It should only be used by newbies who have not yet learned competence in package management.

While the new GUI Aptitude is unnecessary for sophisticated Debian users, it is really Aptitude, not a phony front end of some kind.
