Apache2 not prompting for basic authentication

This is the oddest thing, and I'm desperate for help:

I recently did an apt-get dist-upgrade running on the testing branch. Since then, Apache2 has stopped prompting users for a userid and password (under Basic Authentication) when requesting a protected directory. Rather, the client's browser will just hang there, waiting for the page to load, and if you close the browser and try again, it'll just hang again while trying to access even a public page on the same website. If I wait for a while, it'll eventually time out and let me back into public pages again.

Now, here's the kicker: On the local network with the server, it works just fine. It only seems to happen if you're coming in from a remote site.

Does apache2 require more than port 80 to be open for Basic Authentication now or something? Or is there a required package that got updated or something? Any help would be vastly appreciated.

Thanks.
