Another Radeon 9000 questoin thread

I know y'all are probably sick of hearing this but I have a sad little radeon 9000 pro in my box that I used to have 3d accel working in. It worked great way back in Mandrake 10. It worked decent in Debian Woody and Etch. But now in Lenny I've got nothing. No suprise. I see forums all over the 'net echoing my same lament. Now I DO NOT want to hear any "get an nvidia instead" responses. At the time I'm stuck with the Radeon or reverting to my Rage128.

The problem I have is this. I have Lenny installed. And I like it. And I'm not looking to dump it. I'll just wait until I can upgrade my vid card later if need be. But what has me stumped is I also have a copy of Mandriva 2008 live. When I run it on that 3d seems to work. I haven't figured how to do the whole cube windows thing but wobbly works. And when I checked the xorg.conf file it seems similar to my present xorg.conf file for the obvious exception of DPMS. So I know 3d WILL work with the newer Xorg. Just how is a mystery. If it'll work (and decently I might ad) in Mandriva why not Debian Lenny? Gonna keep diggin but looking for a solution. Not major. It'll only be used for a few games anyhow. Not system-critical. But if it's there I want it to work.

So, you installed the driver from ATI/AMD website, or using the open driver?

Well for now I was using the free ati driver included with Lenny. I tried to load the propriatory driver but there's a problem. xorg 7.2 won't use the drivers older than 3.0. And 2.8 is the last version that supported the Radeon 9000. So I'm stuck.
