Sounds like you haven't got the repos configured and so it can't find the necesary dependencies for you to be able to install libgtk1.2-dev.

Try adding the http://ayo.freshrpms.net repos (installation instructions on the site) and see if that works - otherwise you might have to download the dependencies manually, using http://rpmfind.net to search for them.

Why do you want to build from the source? Is there any real reason to do?

There is mplayer avaibale from this repository:

deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ unstable main

----Yeah, that's right. In fact that happened to me also.

And later on happened to me again with cinelerra.

I was way focused on trying to compilate it, but it was a nightmare....full of error 2 code at the end and compiling fails.....

In the end I realized that there were a repository for it in unstable....so the situation was pretty similar to that described here....

It was only just to point the parallelism of both the issues....

Thank you.

Juan Javier.

It is not Official Unstable Debian Repository

It is derived repository that includes different packages that are sometimes can not be distributes with official CDs.

For example you'll find there

acroread
w32codecs
mplayer

and lot of different stuff that is not availible in official repository

It is not official Debian repository

I've installed mplayer without any problems

Before you want to install anything from the source do following
  1. Search official Stable repository for the package http://packages.debian.org
  2. Search official Testing/Unstable/Experemental repository for same package
  3. Search popular repositories like I shown before. (use synaptic package manager - GUI very easy to work with)
  4. Go to www.apt-get.org and make a query...
  5. Search this forum/google for repository for debian - maybe the name slightly different and because of that you failed to find.
  6. Test official site if there deb package or their own repository (for example for development snapshot of aMule)
  7. If you hadn't found anything - be sure you need exactly this software. Maybe it is not good enough or not popular so not included in debain repository. Or maybe it is so new that only development versions availible
  8. Read the instructions carefully and compile from source

Following these steps will make your life much much easier.
I'm using Linux daily for half a year and need to compile from source only once - for driver for USB modem (that I changer after few days for eth modem)

Make your life easier - repositories are build to install anything you need fast and easy - much easy then in Windows
