Alsa sound problem in Debian Etch 4.0

Hi,
My name is Marshall Haire. I have a system that is running Debian Etch 4.0 that is having trouble with sound. It appears to load all the modules, and when using lspci-vv it detects it as a multimedia device. On boot up I get alsactl restore error about mismatch among controller #1 being either Master playback/Phone playback switch. Once booted into Gnome, under a terminal I run alsaconf and it detects it correctly and then plays music from a CD using gnome-cd. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sound Card: Ensoniq 5880 ens1371 AudioPCI
Alsa version: 1.0.13
Kernel version 2.6.18-4-486
Gnome version: 2.14.3

Thank you for your time.

Marshall Haire

This article may not have a direct answer, but can shed a little light. Have a look at section 3.3

Use Only Debian alsa packages.dont install source compiled,it may have caused confusion.
do check the version of alsa loaded:
Code:
 cat /proc/asound/version

Thanks for the replys
I ran the command that deepclutch told me to run and the version listed is 1.0.12rc1.
Is there any kind of bugs with that version that are known or not. Sounds appears to work fine when booting up on the hard drive, but this system needs to boot from a floppy disk and thats when I receive the alsactl restore errors. Thanks again.
