Sound Problem (alsa, debian 2.6)

Hi Voks,

i have just changed my Linux installation on my Siemens E7010 laptop from SuSe 9.1 to Debian (with Kernel 2.6 usw).

Linux DATA 2.6.8-1-686 #1 Tue Sep 14 00:22:58 EDT 2004 i686 GNU/Linux

My problem is that i have no sound. In the last days i have read many about this Problem. But i think i do something wrong becase it still donīt work *g*

I get error messages in /var/log/messages:

Oct 13 14:28:31 DATA kernel: codec_semaphore: semaphore is not ready [0x1][0x300300]
Oct 13 14:28:31 DATA kernel: codec_write 1: semaphore is not ready for register 0x54

I think that comes from my the card: (output from pci on kernel 2.4 !)

Bus 0, device 31, function 5:
Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 2).
IRQ 11.
I/O at 0x1000 [0x10ff].
I/O at 0x1880 [0x18bf].
Bus 0, device 31, function 6:
Modem: PCI device 8086:2486 (Intel Corp.) (rev 2).
IRQ 11.
I/O at 0x1400 [0x14ff].
I/O at 0x1800 [0x187f].

or lspci (now):

0000:00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)
0000:00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 02)

here an other output:

DATA:/home/data# cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [Modem ]: ICH - Intel 82801CA-ICH3 Modem
Intel 82801CA-ICH3 Modem at 0x1400, irq 11
1 [I82801CAICH3 ]: ICH - Intel 82801CA-ICH3
Intel 82801CA-ICH3 at 0x1000, irq 11

i think this is right.

alsaconf works and find the right sound card.

if i do alsamixer is come out:

DATA:/home/data# alsamixer
No mixer elems found

but this works:
alsamixer -c 1

here is a amixer output:
DATA:/home/data# amixer -c 1

rebooted ---> but still no sound !

here is my lsmod output:

one little success

Hi Friends,

i got one little success:

if i typ aplay -l I can see:

DATA:/home/data/slmodem-2.9.10/scripts/debian# aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Modem [Intel 82801CA-ICH3 Modem], device 0: Intel ICH - Modem [Intel 82801CA-ICH3 Modem - Modem]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: I82801CAICH3 [Intel 82801CA-ICH3], device 0: Intel ICH [Intel 82801CA-ICH3]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

now I have tried a bit und with the following command i got a "pop" sound:
aplay -Dplug:hw:1 /usr/share/sounds/pop.wav

so now I think all sound play go to "hw:0" instad off "hw:1"

How can I change this?

Thanks for Help

Lightbulb Problem solved !

Hi Voks,

after a lot i found the solution:

you must edit the file:
/usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf

so i think you shoud make a copy of the file FIRST !
(like cp /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.org)

than edit the file /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf ! (vi /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf )
Here is the default like this:
defaults.ctl.card 0
defaults.pcm.card 0
defaults.rawmidi.card 0

i changed this to 1 because:
DATA:/home/data/slmodem-2.9.10/scripts/debian# aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Modem [Intel 82801CA-ICH3 Modem], device 0: Intel ICH - Modem [Intel 82801CA-ICH3 Modem - Modem]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: I82801CAICH3 [Intel 82801CA-ICH3], device 0: Intel ICH [Intel 82801CA-ICH3]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
here you can see .... card 0 is the modem und card 1 is the soundcard.
Maybe you must also change the subdevices !

After changing it looks like this:
DATA:~# cat /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf | grep defaults
# defaults
defaults.ctl.card 1
defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.pcm.device 0
defaults.pcm.subdevice -1
defaults.pcm.front.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.front.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.rear.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.rear.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.center_lfe.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.center_lfe.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.side.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.side.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.surround40.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.surround40.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.surround41.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.surround41.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.surround50.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.surround50.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.surround51.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.surround51.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.surround71.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.surround71.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.iec958.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.iec958.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.modem.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.modem.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.rawmidi.card 1
defaults.rawmidi.device 0
defaults.rawmidi.subdevice -1
defaults.hwdep.card 0
defaults.hwdep.device 0
defaults.timer.class 2
defaults.timer.sclass 0
defaults.timer.card 0
defaults.timer.device 0
defaults.timer.subdevice 0

my error messages in /var/log/messages are also history !

so all my SOUND Problems are solved *g*

greetings from Germany !

Hi
I have almost exactly the same problem, with the little difference that my system only recognizes the modem and not the sound device.

aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Modem [Intel 82801DB-ICH4 Modem], device 0: Intel ICH - Modem [Intel 82801DB-ICH4 Modem - Modem]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Any idea to solve that ?
