all terminals (and only terminals) in xorg loading SLOWLY after upgrade (wheezy)

Hi,
I'm currently upgraded to wheezy and also upgraded the package
firmware-linux-nonfree.
Now when I open a terminal (only in my xwindows manager) the terminal text takes FOREVER to load (30 seconds maybe).

I'm thinking this is because of mode-setting that my graphics card is doing? something like that? All other (non-terminal based) applications load quickly without problems.

I'm not sure that this terminal issue is a result of the upgrade, but am wondering whether I should downgrade. If I should downgrade, how exactly should I go about doing that? Any help with this would be awesome.

my graphics card is a
ATI Mobility FireGL V5250

I could also try fglrx...not sure if it will work with a graphics card this old

I'm pretty sure that chip is no longer supported by the fglrx driver.

Do you have direct rendering?
Code:
$ glxinfo | grep render
Have you tried running a terminal emulator from another terminal emulator and looking for any errors in the output, e.g. fire up a terminal emulator and

Code:
$ xterm
or
Code:
$ konsole
or
Code:
$ terminal
etc

Hey thanks for answering my question...it was actually something wrong with my /etc/profile, and nothing wrong with my graphics card. In fact the new firmware-linux-nonfree package in wheezy works beautifully on both my radeon/ati cards. Thanks for the response though.
